the design equation
AS part of the Graphic Business Curriculum Advisory Board for the Granite & Tooele school districts I produced the design equation to help students understand my approach to composition. The graph is a hierarchical approach that takes the guess work out of design decision making for these young designers.
my approach
One example of my creative approach is demonstrated in my work for Hoopes Vision, a LASIK and cataract surgery practice who relied heavily upon print advertising. Hoopes approached me to conceptualize a unique redesign of their poorly performing newspaper ads.
The Salt Lake Tribune offered a unique product known as a “spadea,” a narrow page within a newspaper spread. I imagined this narrow page as a lens through which a person with poor vision sees the world, an elderly couple (the target audience) attempting to enjoy nature, with the narrow page blurring the image and the words Nature without Lasik for the tagline. When the narrow page was turned the unblurred image was revealed and the tagline became Nature with Lasik.

Where print has been criticized for its barriers to the interactivity that digital offers, I embraced these constraints and designed an interactive print-piece that simply but effectively visually communicated the value of the surgical offering, tied to a strong emotional appeal: Get lasik so you can enjoy the beauty of nature.
